Can I byp my ammeter?

Some "help" broke the back off of my ammeter in the dash of my 1966 chrysler new yorker. Am I able to simply connect the 2 leeds and byp the meter all togeather? From what I have read it sounds like this is simply a single amp and shouldnt be an issue but I dont need a wire fire. Is this possible and safe?
