How do you number a table in Microsoft Word Processor?

I made a table with forty rows and four columns. I need each row to be numbered in ascending order, and I need each cell in that row to be numbered the same. Example:I need each cell in row 1 to be numbered '1', and each cell in row two numbered '2'. If I attempt to do this all at once by highlighting the table, and applying the numbering (starting at 41), each cell of the table will be numbered '41'. How do I make this work properly? I'm using Vista.
