Does the guy die in 'we were soldiers'?

you know that guy who's wife just had a baby girl named camille before he left, and he was talking to mel gibson in the church before they were deployed? does he die? because im at the scene where the black guy (willy i think?) gets shot, and he goes back for him and gets shot twice in the stomach. was that him? or is that a different guy? please tell me the hot guy with the new daughter lives!
