Software return policy?

So I bought some crap software from a retail outlet that touts themselves as the 'best buy'. Anyhow when I called and asked them about their return policy they said they couldnt take it back because of "federal copyright laws". I think theyre blowing smoke.I contacted the manufacturer and theyll do a refund but I have to go through a whole process and wait for a check-which is fine but I think the retail outlet is either mislead themselves or BS-ing me trying to cite copyright laws.
