What exactly does "handsome" mean?

Many female customers at a restaurant have told me that I am "so handsome" they range in all ages. Sometimes they say like pardon, sorry to say, or if you dont mind. As a waiter myself, does it just mean that they find me attractive to go out with, to go on a date, or very attractive/almost , or what?
